Things They've Done ! (by Mum & Dad)
It all started with Danny being in the school choir when he attended Sherburn Hungate School. The School was doing a production of Joseph's Technicolor Dream Coat for Danny's Year end, before his year went to the High School, Danny was chosen to play Joseph due to his loudness and lack of shyness alongside his school friends.
The production was the first to be seen at the school in almost five years and was a great success getting great reviews from the local press. Danny's confidence was given a great boost and when Sherburn held its first own talent show Danny agreed to enter.
Along with many local people taking part either singing, dancing, or doing comedy or poetry Danny won 1st prize for his age group singing some songs from the School Musical these were Any Dream Will Do & Close Every Door along with This Little Light Of Mine, again with some very complementary remarks being made in the local tabloids.
At this point Carrie started to express her interests in performing and would sing all the time whilst at home playing. We were amazed at the maturity of her voice.
Danny and Carrie were attending Drama classes at a local venue on a weekly basis and passed a grading exam. Around August 98 Danny was then asked by a local musician to take part in a musical evening called September Song at the local community center, Danny sang the same songs from the talent show 1 and also Ben by Michael Jackson again this went well and Danny's praises were sung.
When the next Sherburn talent Show 2 came around in December 98 as well as Danny entering Carrie decided she also wanted to participate, Danny sang The Way You Make Me Feel and Carrie sang Colors Of The Wind. They appeared alongside many locals and Danny & Carrie came joint 2nd
Danny & Carrie attended an audition for a musical called Carnival Messiah at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The audition consisted of singing and dancing and although Danny or Carrie had no dance experience there singing assured them there place in the show.
At this audition we met Geraldine Conner the shows director and Sheila Howarth who would be in charge of the community casts younger students who would later be split into three groups due to their numbers, the groups were called Mango, Pineapple and Grapefruit, later into the rehearsal schedule the youngsters would be assigned mentors to assist and monitor their progress on a closer basis than was possible by the teachers due to the large numbers of people involved. The rehearsals consisted of workshops for dance, drama, singing and music (percussion). The workshops started in April and continued to September with the show world premier from going on stage from 18th of September to 16th of October. While the workshops were in motion the cast were continually being assessed with written work being submitted by the cast this was to obtain an NVQ which was included within the workshop experience gaining young and old a qualification in the Performing Arts. The first workshops were held at Unity Hall for a number of weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) in these workshops as well as dance, drama, singing and percussion the cast also learnt of the carnival experience which included mask making and stick fighting. From Unity Hall rehearsals moved to Bretton Hall for two whole weeks during the school holidays from 09:00 to 22:00 for the first week and the second week was the same except Danny & Carrie could only attend some of the days due to our work commitments. The rehearsals were very hard work with very high standards expected from everyone yet everyone enjoyed them and had a high sense of achievement. The youngest of the cast were nine years old with the eldest being sixty. The people responsible for the casts training came from all over the globe with Geraldine herself giving the cast her unique method of teaching song. Michael Steele who was the choral director came over from America especially to give the cast his wisdom on voice training and breathing technique. Choreography was taught by Carol La Chapelle who expected nothing less than best from everyone around her, as well as Carol there was David Hamilton who was also part of the cast, David also taught dance to the rest of the cast some wicked moves. Mark Tillotson was assistant director and also in charge of Drama rehearsals, some of Marks classes were amazing to see for the sheer inventiveness and number of ideas that came from the workshop. From Bretton Hall the rehearsals stepped up a gear and moved to the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The work rate was dramatically increased and all the cast adjusted to this over the coming weeks.
Whilst in rehearsals Danny & Carrie were asked to perform alongside other acts at Thorpe Willerby Old Peoples Home. This went well & was enjoyed very much by the residents of the home.
Shortly after Sherburn talent Show 3 was being advertised, Danny and Carrie both showed there interest and decided which songs they would like to perform. They were asked by the organizers if they would perform more than one song each as feedback as to how many people would be taking part wasn't available. On the night of the show there was a good response for the number of acts taking part and Danny and Carrie both did well with Carrie coming third against a 1st placed semi professional Opera singer and a local man who also performs regularly at local events. There next venue was the West Yorkshire Talent Show 1999 which was in its third year of running. The event is run by Sheila Howarth who was in charge of the younger community cast members in Carnival Messiah and Nigel Wilkes Sheila's brother. They told us the Talent Show started with the Playhouse giving up a small space for its first year, the second year the space given was quite a bit bigger and the third year they gave Sheila and Nigel the main auditorium for the show and what a show it was! Prior to the show Sheila and Nigel held regular rehearsals at a local school to give everyone taking part a fair chance of doing there best on the actual show night. The different age categories meant the show was split over three nights, Tuesday the 27th of July 1999 was the 1st night for ages 9 to 11 and Thursday the 29th for ages 12 to 14 and 15 to 16 with Saturday 31st for the dance section.
For Tuesdays show Carrie along with Claire (Sheila's daughter) and Jessica had been rehearsing Whitney Houston's 'ITS NOT RIGHT BUT ITS OK'. All three of the girls had become close friends due to working together in Carnival Messiah they called themselves FRIENDS and the sound they would make with the for mentioned song was to lift the roof off the Playhouse auditorium. All the acts that evening were of a very high standard and were greatly praised by the panel of judges one of which was Galaxy FM's JoJo who's laugh could probably be heard streets away (wicked lady). The evening went very well with an audience of approximately 300 to 400 with Carrie, Claire and Jessica coming joint 1st in the 9 to 11 age group along with two young men called Troy and Jared singing Glory To The Children. Thursday was Danny's age group, the audience was larger (600 plus) and like the Tuesday night the place was jumping. Danny sang Michael Jackson's 'EARTH SONG' lifting the roof of the place and receiving a standing ovation from Barber B of Affirmations Hair Studio, the competition was very tough with a rang of types of song and styles however when the judges announced Danny 1st place for his age group we were overjoyed. On the Saturday which was the Dance competition night the 1st placed acts from the previous nights talent shows were asked to perform again to a crowd of over 800 people in an auditorium that seats only 770. The place was jumping and to this atmosphere Carrie, Claire and Jessica were the dance trio MIXED SPICE. They performed a dance which they learnt with great assistance and patience from David Hamilton and to David's credit they came second.
During this time rehearsals for the Carnival Messiah show was also being carried out and the show was asked if it would perform a world debut along with the winners of the Playhouse Talent show for Rhythms Of The City Leeds music festival. This was an outside venue next to the Playhouse where a range of acts were on view to a crowd of approximately 400 to 500 people. Danny and Carrie enjoyed the experience very much.
Sheila had organized for a large group from the Carnival Messiah cast to take part in the Leeds Carnival this was to be our first experience of a real Carnival. Sheila had really put a lot of work into the costumes and had made more than enough for everyone even me (Dad). The weather was fine and we set off enroute around the course, this took a while and every so often the procession would halt to everyone's cheers and the rhythm of music blasting out from speakers on back of trucks alongside the sounds of steel. The day was long but very enjoyable, an experience we'd like to repeat.
Show night arrived for Carnival Messiah, the Mango group opened the show and also the press night, this extravaganza was a treat for all with cast appearing from around the audience and from start to finish the wonderment and sup rise from one scene to the next never ceased. With taking Danny and Carrie to the Playhouse for every show the distance and time to travel home again was too great thus I was privileged to be allowed to see every performance they appeared in totaling over ten times and never once tiring of it.
After the show Janet and myself thought Danny and Carrie should take some time out to get there breath back and carry on being children again.
After a while we were contacted to see if they would perform for Thorpe Willoughby old peoples home again
Carrie accepted but Danny was busy with school exams, again the evening was enjoyed by the residents with Carrie receiving many compliments for her contribution to the evening.
In the Selby Times an advert was placed asking for acts who were interested in performing for the BBC UK Music Live country wide musical week of shows of which Selby's first evening of musical events was to be held in Selby Abbey. Janet inquired about this and spoke with Joy Cathcart regarding Danny and Carrie, arrangements were made and it was agreed that they would perform in the Abbey on the 22nd March 2000 . Various choirs from around the Selby area including school choirs and a handicapped choir using signing as well as singing formed part of the evenings entertainment. Danny and Carrie both sang two songs each, Carrie was first with AMAZING GRACE followed by GET HERE (by Olita Addams) and Danny sang ANGELS (by Robbie Williams) and YOU ARE NOT ALONE (by Michael Jackson), after each song was performed they received rapturous applause with comments being made to the quality of their performance.
On receiving an invitation to take part in auditions for Young Star For A Night in Liverpool at the Adelphi Britannia Hotel on the 15th June Danny and Carrie were very pleased to accept. We booked a room for the night before
the audition so we weren't rushing the next morning to get there. Next morning there were many people there for the audition all the necessary forms were completed and we were made to que outside the audition room,
Danny and Carrie's turn came and they performed to perfection with the man auditioning the children remarking on there confidence and voice, they only had two minutes to leave an impression of their talent and were told if they got to the next stage we'd hear from them in 24 to 48 hours, there audition was finished for 10 am which left us time to spend the rest of the day exploring Liverpool. We were really impressed with Liverpool ! We visited various places including the Cavern Club and roamed the Shopping centers and the Docks until our feet hurt. We returned home and awaited a phone call ! it never came !
This didn't dishearten Danny and Carrie and on the 27th June 2000 they both performed at Leeds Victoria Gardens for the Leeds City Music Festival Breeze 2000, the venue was for local school children and the passing public, the sun was shinning and everyone was relaxing watching the show. Carrie sang before Danny singing " Over The Rainbow" to the audiences delight then Danny's turn, the school audience danced as he sang to Robbie William's " Angels" throwing carnations to the lady's in the musical break of the song and Michael Jackson's " You are Not Alone" performed by both Danny and Carrie, between them they only had 15 minutes but they enjoyed themselves again receiving nice comments form the public audience and the organizers.
On the 1st of July Sherburn Talent show 2000 went ahead it was the largest show yet with a wonderfully responsive audience, Danny was singing as a guest along with other previous winners of the show and Carrie was singing as a contestant. Ian Calyton of YTV's Tonight program was comp ere for the show and with his wit and easy going attitude he made all the contestants feel at ease. The level of talent in the show was very high with Ian continually remarking on the fact. The 1st half went very well and lasted approximately one hour before the interval, Carrie was third act on stage and like the rest of the contestants Ian introduced Carrie making her laugh and feel at ease, Carrie performed GET HERE (by Olita Addams) and AMAZING GRACE to rapturous applause. Danny sang whilst the judges disappeared in to another room to make their decision as to who would win, they did this to the sounds of Danny singing Robbie William's " Angels" and again filled the musical break with carnation throwing to the delight of the audience and finished his act singing John Denvers " Annie's Song".
Rehearsal for Talent Show 2000 at West Yorkshire Playhouse (Force Of One) was just beginning and both Danny and Carrie knew the songs they wanted to perform. Danny decided to sing YOU ARE NOT ALONE by Michael Jackson and Carrie wanted to sing GET HERE once more. The songs were to be played by a live band called COLOUR WEALTH who's lead vocalist Stella was a friend to Danny and Carrie and to many of the other children singing in the talent show by the Carnival Messiah Show. Stella played one of the lead roles in Carnival Messiah.Dan and Caz both attended all the rehearsals and on the night for the age groups 8 to 11 Carrie performed with all the other children to a packed audience, Carrie was announced the winner receiving a trophy and certificate and was requested to sing once more for the finale, which she did to the delight of the audience (Listen to her singing live at the WYP Talent Show 2000).
The night of Danny's age groups competition came, the talent was astounding with various types of song being sung from older songs to the latest chart hits. When judging was done Dan wasn't placed anywhere but his performance was something to be proud of (Listen to him singing live at the WYP Talent Show 2000)
The Final talent night was for the Dance Groups, these consisted of the younger age group (8 -11yrs) and the older age group (12-16yrs). Carrie danced with Claire and Racheal (Mixed Spice) to a number organized by Sheila in the younger age group, the dances varied in style greatly making it a real problem for the judges to pick a winner, however they did pick a winner and when they announced Mixed Spice as winner the Playhouse went wild. Carrie also performed her winning song once more along with the other winners from the previous nights shows to an appreciative audience.
Carrie was asked to sing Emma's and Andy's wedding on the 19th of August. Emma was a friend of ours whom we had met by the nature of Emma's work (Hairdressing). She had asked Carrie to sing at her wedding after hearing Carrie sing whilst at our house and also learning that Carrie had previously sung at a relations Wedding (Mark and Caroline). Emma asked if Carrie would sing John Denver's Annie's Song, Emma had asked Carrie to sing way back before Sherburn Talent show which is why we bought the backing track for Annie's Song in the first place. The day of the wedding was beautiful the weather and the setting (Monk Fryston Hall) was perfect. Emma and Andy exchanged vows and midway through the service Carrie was called upon to sing Annie's Song, she did this to the tears of joy being shed by almost everyone. The afternoon went by and after some marvelous speeches the disco came to life in the evening. Carrie sang again at the disco and Danny did a Robbie Williams song whilst dancing with Emma. Later there was more requests for then both to sing again but Carrie at this time was finding it hard to keep awake so we made tracks for home.
Carrie and Danny was entered by their Mum for Bridlington Talent Show, Leisure World on the 30th June 2000. Caz decided to sing GET HERE again and Dan decided to sing ANGELS. The both sang at a rehearsal for sound checking then the night of the contest came. In Carrie's age group there were eight contestants and Danny's there was four. Carrie's age group went first with Carrie singing last, she wowed the audience. (Listen to Carrie sing Live at Bridlington Leisure World). Danny did well with ANGELS but we dont think it went down too well with the Judges as he came forth (Danny said laughing "I dont think its my year"), time for some new material we think ! Carrie came first giving her a place in the final and she also won £15 prize money which she was thrilled at as this was the first time she had won money. On the 3rd of September 2000 the Final for all the heats was to be done, again a sound check was carried out and the order of the contestants was chosen by picking a number from a bag, Carrie picked No 1. She opened the show with rapturous applause from the audience and the other eight acts followed. After the interval the older age group did their thing with Natalie Hunter being a contestant, Natalie is from Selby and we've got to know Natelie and her family through the local talent shows.
Carrie came second in her age group to a very old eight year old singing Shirley Bassey's Hey Big Spender.
Caz was awarded a very nice cup, Natelie also came second for her age group (Natelie is staring in a movie alongside Joe Longthorn and is also singing some of the movie's tracks.
Since then Dan and Caz have been for another audition for Young Star For A Night at Sheffields Hillsborough Statium but with no come back.
They have both started singing lessons with a lady called Christine and Danny is now hitting notes he thought he'd lost since his voice broke, Christine is putting together a concert for around christmas time
to be updated later..
